In 2019, if you already have a website or if you are planning to design one, some aspects just cannot be ignored because your web design is the mirror of your work. There are a lot of things to keep in mind while designing website, but you still don’t want to miss important things, right? Easy navigation, responsiveness, load time and a lot of things are to be taken care of. The fact that it takes only 10 seconds to leave an impression on the visitor, who decides whether to stay or just leave, there’s so much pressure. A good website always makes users not only stay but want to come back because of great user experience, and also because they easily got what they wanted.
You can find a lot of blogs telling you what to do with your website to sustain traffic, little tell you what not to!
Here are 10 website design mistakes you can’t afford-
1. USER DOES NOT KNOW WHAT YOUR COMPANY DOES AND WHY SHOULD THEY CHOOSE YOUR WEBSITE RIGHT AWAY–
Data says when your page loads, opinion is formed in 0.5 seconds. So, it is extremely important that the users get to know about your products/services right away. If they don’t find it before hand, they will immediately hit the back button. Users shouldn’t need to search what you offer. You should put elements like awards, testimonials etc. in front too, to build trust and credibility.
2. YOU DO NOT HAVE GRAPHICAL BUTTONS FOR CTA (CALLS TO ACTION)-
Usage of graphical buttons for CTA and text-based CTA. If CTA are not eye catchy and look dull, the users may never work up for it.
3. YOU DO NOT HAVE A MOBILE FRIENDLY WEBSITE-
All search engines now including google are giving priority to the websites which are mobile friendly through search results. If your website is not mobile friendly, you will not be prioritized for search results on SERP (search engine result page). Also, now people use mobiles more than desktops, so, if they do not find website that fits the size of the screen, they will leave dissatisfied. Sometimes, the sites which are not mobile friendly, display unusual font sizes, images takes lots of time to load and there is difficult navigation. So, always design a website which is mobile friendly.
4. FONT SIZE TOO SMALL THAT IT IS NOT READABLE-
Have you ever faced a situation where the website’s content font size is way too small that you find it difficult to read? And like a majority of internet users you have hit the back button? Make sure this does not happen on your website. Font size of text comes under the most common mistakes made while designing a website as it becomes too difficult to read. The font size and font should be reader friendly and compatible across all devices. Compatibility in terms of browser and platform. So how to ensure compatibility? As when you ask user to change the browser halfway, it’s annoying and affect the spend time on your website. By using web safe fonts will make your website’s text browser compatible.
5. YOUR WEBSITE TAKE MORE TIME TO LOAD-
If you think people are impatient offline, try them online! The result of their impatience is the ‘back button’. Every user wants results fast and if your website takes a lot of time to load, definitely users will leave and go to another site. Data says that 47% of people expect a web page to load in 2-3 seconds.
6. POOR NAVIGATION-
Have you ever visited a website too fancy and pretty but couldn’t find anything you were looking for? Do not let this happen to your website too. design is important indeed, but navigation is too. visitors like easy navigation, they don’t want to put time in to searching.
Make what you offer noticeable with big and attractive fonts. If you are selling goods, the link to the products should be easy to find.
7. USING PDF FILES-
Imagine you are reading something on a page with utter concentration and when you clicked on a link it made you wait for the PDF viewer to open. Once it is opened (which took a lot of time), everything is different, the fonts, texts everything. Will it be as engaging as it was before. Many will not even wait for the PDF viewer to open. And you don’t want to this to happen to your website, so, avoid PDF files as much as possible.
8. YOUR WEBSITE IS FULL OF LINKS WHICH OPENS NEW BROWSER WINDOWS-
With desktops it is manageable, but in mobile, it gets very confusing and problematic. It creates a very bad user experience. New browser windows comes with added disadvantages like there’s no back button there, creates poor navigation and it slows down the device of the user which completely ruin their experience.
9. THE LINKS AND BUTTONS ON YOUR WEBSITE ARE NOT BIG ENOUGH TO CLICK-
This becomes a problem when using a mobile device. Either the buttons are too small to click, and it becomes a nightmare when they are placed close to each other. You may never land on the page you actually wanted. They are good for mouse clicks but not for human fingers.
Data says that 60% of the total internet users are mobile users. So, this is one mistake you cannot afford to make. Make links and buttons easy to tap.
10. YOUR WEBSITE IS NOT HTTPS (SECURE)-
If your website needs personal information like name, contact number or email address of users for enhanced services- your site needs to be secured. If your website is not secure, search engines will pull you down from the search results which will limit your visibility online. For many cautious website visitors, it’s like a red flag. And if you are an ecommerce site, secured page is MUST.
